I'll get back to how I got here soon. But today I want to show you my latest project.
This week I took an online class, through In the Studio's Workshop Week 5 (more on that shortly). It was on mission rugs, and women (mostly) who created beautiful rugs out of materials they had around to sell. They had to find beauty in everyday life, even when things were really rough for them, as the wives of fishermen.
So, in reading through the materials before class, I decided this was a great opportunity to hook a pic of my mom's house in the fall. The tree out front is the first in the neighborhood to change, and it's colors are beautiful. Since my mom is planning to sell the house in the next year, I decided this was the perfect time. I should mention that her parents bought the house when it was built, when she was 4. Our family is the only family that has lived there in 60 years.
So I'm attempting to highlight the beauty in nature, even in suburbia. The house, grass, sidewalk are all being done with wool straps (mostly cut to a 5), and the tree will be yarn- the trunk is done; the leaves will be a beautifully variegated fine fall-colored yarn. The trees behind the house will be shades of green roving, and the sky will have some blue yarn, sari silk, and maybe some curlylocks.
I hit a slight block last night when I discovered my texture for the siding was too close to the gray of the windows. I just need to cut some natural wool, since the house is white. But I'm happy so far.
